The Cesar Millan Guide to Confidence – 3 Top Tips to Become More Confident Today by Cindy Davis
If you’ve ever wanted to boost your confidence, then start with these three easy to follow tips, which are designed to increase your confidence today. By setting a goal, facing your fears and celebrating your successes, you will begin to make the changes you want to see in your life – Cesar Millan style!
In case you haven’t seen Cesar Millan (also known as The Dog Whisperer) in action, he uses his calm, assertive energy and in-depth knowledge of dog psychology to rehabilitate dogs, some of which have serious behavioural issues. Cesar trains dog lovers to become “calm, assertive pack leaders”. But you don’t have to own a dog or be a dog to learn from Cesar’s methods!
Tip 1 – set a confidence goal or outcome
When Cesar is working with a dog and its owner, he always has an outcome in mind. This way, he knows when things are moving in the right direction. Often we know exactly what we don’t want, but don’t take time to identify what we do want instead.
Take action – grab a notepad and pen or get on your computer and write down the answers to these three questions:
1. What would I like to have happen with my confidence levels? Be specific. For example, “I want to feel comfortable doing a presentation in front of my team at work on Friday.”
2. How will I know when I’ve achieved this (what will I see, hear and feel)?
3. What will the impact be if I get my goal?
These simple questions will help you to focus on what you do want – how confident you really want to be – and you will be amazed at the difference this makes.
Tip 2 – face your fears
Now you have a clear goal, let’s look at what may have been stopping you from being the confident person you want to be: fear. For example, it may be fear of making a mistake, looking silly or not being good enough.
To help his clients gain confidence, Cesar asks them to face their fears. This may sound a bit crazy, but by avoiding what you fear, you only make it stronger.
Take action-think of a situation in which you want to be more confident and make a note of the fears that get in your way. Using the previous example of presenting in front of your team, you might notice that you’re afraid of being asked a question and not being able to answer it, or completely freezing up.
Next, imagine your best friend is telling you they have this fear. What advice or reassurance would you give them?
Finally, imagine your friend is giving you the same advice – really hear them saying it to you – and simply allow yourself to take it all on board.
Tip 3 – celebrate your successes
This is the bit that often gets missed out, but it is so important to notice when you are moving towards your goal, even if it’s just one baby-step at a time. Cesar always points out progress to his clients, as they are often so caught up in their problem they fail to notice subtle changes.
Take action – refer to your goal often, keeping a note of progress you’ve made so far and how much closer you are to achieving what you want. You can even identify every step you need to take along the way and then each step becomes a mini-goal that you can cross off as you reach it. You can allow yourself to really savour the satisfaction of doing this!
So that’s it! It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3. So what’s stopping you from getting started right now – setting a goal and facing your fears, so that you can celebrate successfully becoming the confident person you really want to be?
