What The Dog Whisperer Taught Me About Internet Marketing
I happened to come upon the show “The Dog Whisperer” yesterday. The show stars Cesar Millan, a well known dog trainer who is known as the Dog Whisperer. This particular segment was about a woman who owned two dogs. The second dog was a pit bull/labrador mix she took in. Everything was going great until a new man entered the women’s life and they got engaged. The dog didn’t like the fiancé and the dog was winning. Enter Cesar.
Cesar saw that the dog was dominating the relationship. The woman was very emotional about the dog. She felt sorry for the dog because of what it had been through. She didn’t want the dog to suffer any more. So she “protected” the dog. The dog became the alpha in the relationship and her fiancé was a threat.
Cesar pointed out to the women that dog didn’t care that she felt sorry for him and didn’t care about what happened in the past. He was just living in the moment and letting sleeping dogs lie. But the women’s beliefs about the dog and the way she treated him were affecting the dog’s behavior. As a result, the Dog Behavior was “limited” by how the woman treated him.
The women had to get over her emotions and change her thinking about the dog in order to take control of the relationship. Once she changed her mind set and her behavior, the dog behaved appropriately and accepted the fiancé as a co-alpha leader.
So what lessons do internet marketers learn from this story? The lesson is that to become a successful internet marketer you have to begin with the right mindset and the right behaviors (and be an alpha leader as Mike Dillard, author of Magnetic Sponsoring, says).
Just like the women had to change her thinking and behavior regarding the dog, you have to get rid of your “stink’in think’in” as Zig Ziglar would say. And you have to put aside limiting beliefs and behaviors, i.e., bad habits. Whatever happened in the past is dead. Learn from it and move on.
The internet marketing world can be a dog eat dog world. And true, “some days you’re the dog; some days you’re the hydrant.” But take a clue from the dogs. Remember that people only care about the solution to their problem. They’ll respond when you show them you have the answer they need and want. Thanks Cesar.
