Will a dog poop on the floor to punish a humans behavior?
I responded to an ad about a dog, the owner was honest with me about the dogs behavior. She told me if she doesn’t let the dog sleep with her he deficates outside her bedroom door. Is the dog punishing her? Is it some form of abandonment issue or dominance thing? I’m hoping to pass this along to her to help her out. Any Ideas?
No. Dogs do not soil the house to punish anyone. That’s a human misunderstanding of dog behavior.
A lot of things could be going on with the pooping. Anxiety; the spot still smells like the place to poop because it’s not been properly cleaned to remove the scent; he may need to go out more frequently than he is taken, etc.
A crate, a good enzymatic cleaner and a calmer owner would turn this around completely. It sounds to me as though the owner doesn’t know how to train and has given up. Happens a lot, unfortunately.
